In the process of learning how to paint in the SpongeBob style, I was given several backgrounds from previous SB episodes to replicate. This is my painting - a “master copy,” if you will - of one such SB background. I am particularly fond of this painting because the acrylic paint version needed almost no touch ups digitally (except for the line work and shadows, which are almost always added later over the acrylic painting in photoshop).

A little while back I was contacted by the awesome folks over at Soul Pancake to do one of their Art Attack videos! It was such an amazing experience, and definitely a challenge to come up with a painting out of thin air in about four hours. It’s funny, inevitably there are things about this particular painting that I would have changed had I had time to step back from the process of painting it, but I sort of like having this time-capsule of what my initial thought-process is like. It’s certainly enlightening, and I think has helped me to fix some bad painting habits I had developed. Just goes to show you, sometimes you need to see your work through the prism of another medium, in this case, video!

The Soul Pancake crew were wonderful, and I want to give a shout-out to Jacob Menache, Ethan Coco, Gary Haroldson, and the director, Bayan Joonam - you guys ROCK! Also, many thanks to Anabella Casanova for contacting me about this opportunity.

Seasons greetings and an early happy New Year, everyone! It is a bitter-sweet end of year for me - 2012 was the year I saw many of my dreams come true - but I know 2013 will bring even greater adventures!

I want to take this moment to thank everyone who has been a follower and a supporter of me and my work these last several years… It’s been so wonderful getting to know you all through the internet; and then this year getting to meet many of you at conventions and such! I can’t believe the tumblr is nearing the 60,000 followers mark - I really appreciate everyone sticking with me. If this blog has taught me anything, it is to never stop working, because, of course, “inspiration comes of working.” So I hope you understand me when I say, I wish all of you a year full of work!

Also, a note on things to come - in the new year I will be announcing the particularss of a raffle give-away, in which several lucky followers will get the chance to win copies of the “Reality is Overrated” poster I created for Chris Baty. Keep a look-out for the details! But until then, happy holidays! See you in the new year!

Wow! Finally an update, huh? Just a few work-break doodles, though - there will be more substantial updates to come, but for now, this will have to do. It has been a whirlwind couple weeks working on Cloud 2: Revenge of the Leftovers at Sony Animation - every day is a new adventure! I can’t believe I get to be surrounded by such a phenomenal group of artists every day. They have taught me so much! I’ve listed some of their links at the bottom of this post - check out their blogs, they are incredibly talented! And not only are they great artists, they are also great people - I’m so happy to have had the opportunity to get to know them.

Anyway, my time for art outside of work has been severely limited, but I suppose that’s all par for the course. I’m sure I’ll be able to get some personal work in after the holidays pass. Happy Holidays everybody!

This weekend has been a bit of a whirlwind, and it’s not even over yet! I thought I’d take a break from all the CTN Expo festivities and post a sketchbook round-up. Just some odds and ends from the last month, including some Wreck-It-Ralph fan sketches. CTN has been wonderful so far - so great to see old friends and to meet new ones; and there is so much amazing new talent out there! Next year I’ve resolved to get a booth and actually sell stuff, but this year I was more than content to walk around and spend money on sketchbooks and prints! I’m back at it today - if you’re there, come say hi; I’ll be at the Nickelodeon booth from 12-5PM reviewing portfolios!

I’m very excited to finally be able to share one of the illustrations I’ve been working on. A few months ago I was contacted by Chris Baty (of NaNoWriMo fame) to illustrate a poster centered around encouraging people to write! I had a lot of fun with this painting; it’s always nice when your freelance work allows you to do something completely different from your day job, and this poster did just that for me. If you’re interested in buying this poster (or perhaps another poster in Chris’ shop), you can find a large version here and a small version here.

Also, this week has been quite the adventure for me, as I’ve been offered a position as a visual development artist at Sony Pictures Animation on “Cloudy 2”! It’s only been one week, and already I’ve learned so much from being surrounded by the incredible talent there!

Recently, I was given the chance to participate in Light Grey Art Lab’s “Tarot, Mystics, and the Occult” show, which will be running from today until November 30th. I’m honored to be showing along-side the other amazingly talented artists in the exhibition!
